Solar City That Produces 4 Times The Energy It Consumes.

I think this is one of the most interesting eco-design stories from 2010. Rolf Disch designed the Sonnenschiff solar city in Freiburg, Germany, which not only doesn't use more energy than it produces but actually makes 4 times the amount of energy that it consumes!

It does this through smart solar design and lots and lots of photovoltaic panels pointed in the right direction. The Sonnenschiff (Solar Ship) and Solarsiedlung (Solar Village) emphasize power production from the start by incorporating a series of large rooftop solar arrays that double as sun shades.

The medium-density project balances size, accessibility, green space, and solar exposure. In all, 52 homes make up a neighborhood anchored to Sonnenschiff, a mixed-use residential and commercial building that emphasizes livability with a minimal footprint. Advanced technologies like phase-change materials and vacuum insulation significantly boost the thermal performance of the building’s wall system.

See! Why can't we do this with all homes being built and all skyscrapers!

Great concept- and it looks fine too.
