Reaching The Hungry In Gaza

The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched Operation Lifeline Gaza, a campaign to raise awareness and resources for the victims of the recent hostilities. The appeal is for $81 million for critically needed food and logistics for 365,000 people in need.

WFP has begun emergency distributions of nutritious date bars and high energy biscuits to thousands of displaced people in Gaza City to ensure that the food needs of the entire non-refugee population are met following three weeks of heavy fighting.

At the same time, it is scaling up its regular distributions of wheat flour, vegetable oil, chick peas and sugar and aims to reach a total of 365,000 people under Operation Lifeline Gaza. So far, more than 204,000 people have received a two-month ration since the Gaza crisis erupted on 27 December.

WFP now has food stocks totalling 4,125 metric tons in Gaza warehouses. While this is sufficient for the next few weeks, far greater quantities are needed to cover the needs of the months ahead.

From next week, WFP plans to move 600 metric tons of food every day into Gaza. For this to happen, however, all crossing points into Gaza will need to be reopened.

Green Roofed Hillside City In Sweden

The New Heden project, which has been designed for an underutilised site in Gothenburg, Sweden, will house 100.000 people in 5.000 new apartments and will provide commercial zones, sports facilites and parks, whilst reducing the distance that residents need to travel to work every day.

The planned development will transform a vacant city block into a self-contained sustainable city, with cycing paths and walkways. The green roofs provide excellent insulation for the buildings beneath while absorbing rainwater that can be purified and re-used as househild water.

The project also includes plans for the local cultivation of fruits and vegetables, and after development the site will feature a much greater biomass than before.

The architects of this exciting new development, Kjellgren Kaminsky, state: “With a unique identity of sustainable densification the new town block Heden creates a vision of a garden block that connects green space, healthy lifestyle and pleasant surroundings to a modern living atmosphere.”

Green For All

The American organisation Green For All recently published its Annual Report for 2008.

Founded by Van Jones at the beginning of 2008, Green For All aims to combine the promotion of green practices with the creation of green jobs, the idea being that sustainability and protection of the environment is not something just for the so-called 'eco-chic', but can and should involve the lower-income groups, who can find work that not only is financially beneficial, but is also environmentally-friendly. As they state in their site, "We believe that the national effort to curb global warming and oil dependence can simultaneously create well-paid green-collar jobs, safer streets and healthier communities."

You can download the report here.

Van Jones, the founder of Green For All, has also written a book The Green Collar Economy, and you can watch the short video below where he talks about it.

Prem Rawat - Man Of Peace

A new website has just come on line - Prem Rawat - Man Of Peace - which provides the most accurate and comprehensive biographical account of Prem Rawat available on the internet.

For over 40 years, Prem Rawat has been working to help people find peace inside themselves and has been invited to speak in many countries and to thousands of people all over the world. At the bottom of this post you can see a short extract of his speech at the UN in San Francisco in 2005, when he was invited to speak at the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations.

I have been inspired by both the man and his message and would encourage anyone to try and find out more. This is a short quote of what he has said -

"Every living human being has something wonderful happening inside. Within each person is a supreme beauty. Within each person is peace, joy, the feeling of the heart. I offer inspiration, reminding people of the beauty of existence; I remind people that life itself is a gift. I encourage people to know that it is possible to open windows of understanding so they can be fulfilled.

I see each human being as complete. Within each one shines a sun so bright that it can make any darkness go away. What I am proposing is that within each individual is the domain where peace can be found. This is the message that I feel is sorely needed in this world. How important it is for that one message to be accessible to everyone. More than just words, I offer a practical way to feel the contentment that is already within."
